A City of Small, Soft Craft
Beijing, China
Migrant families are the backbone of Beijing, sustaining its service industries, running its corner-shops, convenient stores and providing manual labour for its community's comfort. However, their own wellbeing and homes have been nothing short of a scandal, restricted to far away suburbs and information settlements of poor quality and amenity. Both the 996 culture and the former one-child policy promotes a solitary lifestyle. My project seeks to both bring back these labour-workers and restitch the family unit together, in a social housing project made sustainable through its live-work model, bringing small, soft craft back into the heart of the city.
